Hanging braids for the brocade covers of portable shrines of Saidaiji Temple

Some years ago, an exhibition of Saidaiji temple was held at Abeno Harukasu museum.  Hoping to see this braid, I went there. Indeed the portable shrines were among the exhibits, but to my regret, the gorgeous brocade covers and the braids had been removed.

This braid is shown in “Studies of archaic braiding techniques in Japan” by Masako Kinoshita on 29 and 34 of color pages and on pp. 142-146 of the main text.  Kinoshita-sensei introduces some braiding methods for this braid, of which I tried to braid solo by reference to a duo method where each braider holds 8 kute on one hand.

In case of duo, the left braider braids AACC while the right braider does AGCD and they exchange innermost braids before the left braider does inner A and C.  G means an Out-and-Open after twisting.  The left braider repeats AA and CC resulting in two separate braids while the right braider twists the outer kute connecting the two braids.  You get a twofold wide braid.

The interesting part I found was how to change patterns.  With 4-layer quadruple kakugumi, we change braiding technique, but here we insert one pattern, AA for the left braider and CD for the right braider, after repeating 32 cycles. Then we continue AACC and AGCD.  Until we insert the pattern changing AA and CD, the braid is separated into two parts.  By inserting an extra AA and CD, the two braids are connected and the pattern changes. Amazing!  We understand the reason once we know the principle, but I was intrigued at first.  About the principle, I am going to clarify later this year.

That means we repeat the same braiding method all the way, inserting an extra AA and CD once in 32 cycles.  Sounds easy and no chance to make mistakes, but I did make many mistakes and undid each time anyway.  When I undid, I faithfully followed my rule, that is “step by step in a correct reverse order”.

According to the exhibition brochure, these portable shrines were made in the 14th century.  Inside, two mirrors, each symbolizing the Inner Sanctuary and Outer Sanctuary of the Grand Shrine of Ise, are enshrined together with two mandalas of Buddhism.  The portable shrines represent the syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism.  The religion of Japanese people is complicated indeed.
