Itsukushimagumi

This is called Itsukushimagumi.  The name derives from the shrine in Hiroshima, Itsukushima Shrine.  The braid is used to tie around scrolls of  Buddhist sutras dedicated by a famous samurai leader, Tairano Kiyomori, in the 12th century.  The scrolls are extremely lavish showing off the financial and political power of the family of Taira.

Itsukushimagumi consists of two parts: single layer double unit twill and chevrons.  The two parts are interlinked.  To change colors, the double unit twill is applied to the whole braid.  It is a rather modern design, for the 12 century braid, effectively showing different colors clearly.

On “Study of Archaic Braiding Techniques in Japan” by Kinoshita-sensei, Itsukushimagumi is shown on color pages #31 and #43, and on pages 150-154 in the main text.

We use 22 kute.  The braid is 2-folded, and looks like the ones in the photo when you unfold the braid.  The bottom layer of the 2-fold is not easy to see during braiding.  Perhaps because I tightened the braid unevenly, my diamond shapes tend to be distorted.

The chevrons on the both ends and the ones in the middle look different.  The middle one looks larger and more relaxed.  There is a secret to it, but you will have to refer to the book of Kinoshita-sensei to unveil the secret.

You may find it strange to hear that Kiyomori dedicated Buddhist sutras to a Shinto shrine.  But, that is an example to show that Japanese gods are genuinely open-minded.
