角組 Kakugumi

We are going to braid Kakugumi using the Basic Movement B: Open & Cross.  Kaku means square and the braid has a solid square structure.  We begin with two different colors, 4 threads in dark color on the left hand and 4 in light color on the right.  We are going to have nice V-shaped chevron patterns.

As we plan to make various samples, we need to organize them nicely.  For that purpose, I always make a circle at the top of a braid, which comes handy when sorting out braids or attaching braids to something.  I am going to show you in the video how to make a circle.

--- Video ----

I apologize that you hear cicadas singing in the background.

Having made a bi-color chevron braid, we can try other color combinations.  You will be amazed to find unexpected nice patterns and color-combinations.  When you are comfortable with 8 Kute, you can make another Kute and more to try 9 and 10 Kute braids.  Please make it a rule to keep records of your color combination patterns so that later you do not wonder how you came up with such a nice pattern.  It is easy.  For example, the braid in the video is made with 4 dark and 4 light colors, so you write ●●●● ○○○○.

Kuteuchi Basic 4 Movements

With the Kute we have made, we start braiding.  The thread I use is cotton, but wool and silk are also good.  Make sure you use straight threads so that you can see the braiding clearly.  Nep yarns are not suitable.

Let’s start with eight 80cm long threads.  Tie the both ends of a thread to the loops of a Kute.  When you have made 4, then the next four loops have to go through the first 4 loops.  With another thread, make a loop through the chain we have just made with 4 and 4 loops.  This last loop is to fix to a cramp.

Now we are ready to start braiding.

--- video ---

Though I operate over a desk in the video to show you clearly, it is not comfortable to work.  So when you do it, work in a comfortable space.

Basic Four Movements:

    A: Out and Open
    B: Out and Cross
    C: In and Open
    D: In and Cross

How to make Kute

We need a 3mm thick string.  The top white one is a twisted cotton string and the bottom is a dark blue braided string.  The material can be anything, but rather than a soft string, a thick and sturdy one is more suitable.
Kute is 25cm long and the loops at both ends are 6cm long, thus we need a 31cm string per Kute.  To start with, we make 8 Kute.  We can always make more whenever we make wider braids.
Now we make loops at both ends.  Fold the string at 6cm from the end.  Make a stich through the strings and coil around the strings with the thread many times so that the end of the short string does not show.  To make strong and nice coils, I recommend that you coil many times with a fine thread rather than a few times with a thick thread.
Make another loop at the other end.  Now we have a nice Kute.

Horyuji Bansuishoku using Kute technique

The original Bansuishokus of Horyuji temple are kept at Sannomaru Shozokan Museum in Tokyo.  They are made of hard twist silk yarn, and measure 5.5 cm in width and the longest one is 135 cm long.  The both ends are decorated with V-shaped metal ornaments, giving the braids impressive look.

As I am not trained enough to deal with silk yarns, I used cotton knitting yarns.  The finished works are 4.5 cm wide and the red one is 84 cm and the white one is 90 cm long.  I started braiding from the middle in length towards the ends using 56 Kutes.  As a solo braider, 90 cm is the longest I can manage.

I used "Study of Archaic Braiding Techniques in Japan" pp. 108-110 by Masako Kinoshita as reference.

It was not easy to handle 56 Kutes.  I hand-made a set of resting arms so that a half of the 56 Kutes could rest while I braid the other half, which helped me a lot.

After a lot of struggle, challenge, and importantly a lot of advice from my seniors, I somehow managed to finish the two braids.

The Horyuji originals are the red version only, but because I decided to submit my work to the exhibition of Japan Kumihimo Society, I added the white version.  They have rewarded me with the second best prize.  I am deeply moved and thankful to everyone who helped me.

Bag with Sanadahimo handles

Speaking of a bag with Sanadahimo handles, I made a bag last June.  The body is made of Hakata-obi material and the bottom part is made of a material which I bought at a curtain shop.  They had a pile of odd size curtain materials for 100 yen each.  This one is a block-out drape.  The handles are Sanadahimo.  Sanadahimo alone were good enough, but I backed them up with the block-out drape material.

Sanadahimo for Mother's bag

My mother said she would make a bag with an obi material.  So I made a Sanadahimo belt to match her rose color bag.  Sanadahimo is strong and ideal for a bag belt.  The traditional way is to insert the weft one way, but I learned to do so from both sides, which is easier for me as a beginner because I can tighten the warp threads by pulling the two wefts with both hands.  But I am also interested in doing it one way.

Alphabets with Loop Braids

"European Loop Braiding - Investigations and Results"
Noémi Speiser & Joy Boutrup

A friend of mine lent me a book called "European Loop Braiding - Investigations and Results"  by Noémi Speiser & Joy Boutrup.  The book introduces how to braid alphabets!  It is a 4-volume series and the one I read was Part 2.  The authors studied several old manuscripts and compared them trying to reproduce alphabets.  Oddly enough none of the existent manuscripts explains how to braid, but they only show how to change colors to produce alphabets.  After studying the explanations and charts, the authors make suggestions about how to braid.
Basically it is Spanish Braiding using two colors, dark and light.  Once you start braiding, it is hard to stop because you want to see what the next letter looks like.  I have not tried all the letters yet.  I will have to concentrate enough to complete all the letters without mistake.
The top one with lilac letters on black background is made with 10 loops and the bottom one with light blue letters on dark blue background is with 14 loops.  You need a bit of experience to handle 14 loops with 10 fingers.  I used Kute for the 14-loop.  One of the good things about Kute is that you can lay down loops while working with other ones and consequently you can work with a number of loops comfortably.
