１メートルの幡垂飾でショルダーバッグ 1 meter Bansuishoku for a shoulder bag

長い幡垂飾に挑戦しようと、140cmの糸を用意しました。半分の70cmにクテと足糸をつけると、92cm。　近視の私には、92cm先の組み目がよく見えません。何度か失敗して、なんとか数段組みました。編み物もそうですが、最初が難しいですね。あとは割合上手く進みました。最後まで組んで、反対側を始めるのも苦労でした。糸をピンと張らないと正しく組まれているのか解らないが、ピンと張るには遠くから引っ張らなければならず、そこからは組み目がよく見えない、という状況です。片手で糸を遠くへひっぱりつつ、組み目を覗き込む、それを左右繰り返す、という動作が続きます。手足のよい体操になりました。

20ループで組んで、仕上がりは長さ105cm、幅22mmになりました。コットンキングを使用しました。　

できあがった紐を、ショルダーバッグにつけました。昨年のNHK「すてきにハンドメイド」のテキストにあった型紙を使って、裂き織と、ヤフオクで買った帯地をあわせ仕立てました。テキストでは口が開かないようにスナップをつけていましたが、私は紐を垂らすようにしてみました。こちらは１０ループのAADDです。 

幡垂飾は、どんな配色にしても格調高くて素敵です。

For my next challenge to braid a long Bansuishoku, I prepared 140cm-long Cotton King threads.  Folded in half, added Kute and Foot Thread, the total length is 92cm.  With my short-sighted eyes, I could not see the braided parts clearly.  After some failures, I managed to braid several rows.  Like knitting, the starting part is the most difficult.  The rest went well.  When I finished the first half, I turned the braid upside down and started the other half.  Again, it was not easy.  You have to keep the threads tight to check the braided parts, but to tighten the thread you have to be away from the braided parts, and you cannot see very well.  While pulling away the threads with one hand, I checked the braided part closely, and do the same on the other side.  I repeated these movements.  It was a good hand and feet exercise. 

I used 20 loops.  The finished braid was 105cm long and 22mm wide. 

I attached the finished Bansuishoku to a shoulder bag which I made using a pattern I found in a textbook of NHK “Sutekini Handmade” from last year.  The material is Sakiori I made some years ago and Obi (kimono sash) material.  Instead of a snap fastener at the top of inside, I used another braid, 10-loop AADD.

Bansuishoku is always elegant and beautiful with any color combinations.

改良した道具で久しぶりの幡垂飾 Bansuishoku again using improved tools

懸案の道具の改良をしました。クテの数が多くなると、手で持ちきれなくなります。そこで、作業しないクテを休めておく台があればということで、１年半ほど前に、ホームセンターで探し回って、ようやく見つけたのが、タオル掛けです。これに合う丸い木の棒を買って来て、かまぼこ板に取り付けました。それをスタンドに取り付けたいのですが、何かないかと、父の作業小屋をあさってみると、父が夜も盆栽の手入れができるようにと使っていた電気スタンドの台がありました。これにかまぼこ板をクランプで取り付ければ、完璧です。　

スタンドのホコリや汚れをきれいにしていて気づいたのですが、これを他でも見たことがあるのです。ようやく思い出したのが、洋裁用のボディです。ボディの部分を取り外すと、まるで双子のように同じ形をしていました。

昨年はこの２つのクテ休め台を使って、幡垂飾を組みました。問題は、スタンドの円盤にクランプで取り付けている部分が小さいため、時々外れてしまうことでした。それで、今回、新しいかまぼこ板に丸い穴を開けて、スタンドのポールを通すことで、しっかりと安定させることにしました。丸い穴を開けるのが大変でしたが、いくつか失敗して、なんとかでき上がりました。

できあがった物を眺めて、また思い出したのが、カメラの三脚です。昔買った簡単な三脚を出してみると、うまい具合に、クテを掛けてくださいと言わんばかりに、ハンドルが付いています。ハンドルの手元が太くて、その先が細くなっているのが難点ですが、持ち運びも簡単だから、仲間と作業をするときに持っていけます。こうして眺めてみると、役に立つ道具が身近にあるものだなと、感心しました。

改良した道具を使ってさっそく、幡垂飾のサンプルを作りました。しっかりした組み方なので、バッグの持ち手や、夏のワンピースのベルトにいいかなと思います。

Finally I managed to improve my Kute Rest Stand.  When you have too many Kute to hold in your hands, you may want to deposit some of them somewhere.  About one and a half years ago, I visited a home center and looked for a suitable tool until I found a pair of towel hanger parts.  With a matching wooden rod, and a plate of Kamaboko*, I made a Kute Rest.  What I needed next was a stand.  I looked around in my late father’s shed, and found a lamp stand which he used when he trimmed Bonsai in the evening.  I attached my Kute Rest to this stand with a cramp. 

* Kamaboko is a steamed fish paste which is often attached to a wooden plate.

While I was cleaning the old stand, I noticed that I had seen something like this before.  I finally remembered.  It was a body I use for dressmaking.  After removing the body part, I found almost the same stand as the one I already found.  They were almost twins. 

Using these Kute Rest Stands, I braided Bansuishoku last Aril.  The problem was that the connecting parts were too small that sometimes the Rest fell off.  I decided to make a hole in the wooden plate through which the stand pole can go so that the plate becomes stable.  Making a hole was not an easy task for me.  After sacrificing several Kamaboko plates, I finally made two plates with a more-or-less round hole.

I was admiring my finished work when I recalled a tripod for a camera.  I dug out my old tripod.  It has a nice handle as if it is inviting Kute to be suspended.  Ideally the handle should be of the same thickness, but never mind.  It is foldable and easy to carry.  I can take it in my bag when my team gets together to work.  Looking around, I realized anew that I am surrounded by very useful tools once I look for it.

As a trial of the newly improved tool, I made samples of Bansuishoku.  It is a sturdy and beautiful pattern, good for bag handles and a belt for a summer dress.

クテを新調 Newly made Kute

新しいクテを２２本作りました。今回は、綿100％エムジーコードというワックスコードを使いました。これがとても使い心地が良いのです。ほどよいクッションがあって、手になじみます。色もいろいろあるので、足糸なしで組むこともできます。もっと早くこのコードを使えばよかったと思いました。手仕事をするのに道具は大事ですね。次は、写真に写っているクテ休め台を改良したいのですが、大工仕事になるので、なかなか手が出ません。

I newly made 22 Kute.  This time, I used 100% cotton MG code, a kind of wax code.  This was a success!  The code has a good softness and feels good to fingers.  It comes in different colors, and I can braid without foot thread, if I wanted.  I wish I had used this code much earlier.  Good tools are very important when you work with hands.  My next challenge is to improve the Kute holder that you can see in the photo.  It involves some carpentry work and I am rather reluctant.

モヘアを組む Braid with mohair

明けましておめでとうございます。今年もよろしくお願いします。

元旦早々、母から紐の注文が入りました。母が今編んでいるセーターの襟元に通す紐を、共の糸で組んで欲しい、というものです。「OK」と２つ返事をしたのはいいのですが、注文制作というのは、なかなか難しいと思い知りました。

セーターは、紫のモヘヤとグレー中細の２本取りで編んであります。ゴム編みに開けた穴に紐を通して前で結びます。組み方は、断面が丸く仕上がるBBCCが良いと思いました。

まず１０ループで作った見本を母に見せると、「太くて硬い」と言います。８ループでも太すぎ。ゆったりと組んだ６ループでようやく合格です。

長さは７３センチ。両手を広げて引き締めることができる最大の長さは、クテと足糸の分を引くと私の場合は５５センチです。組み上がると約30%短くなるので、最長３８センチまでです。従って、長さの真ん中から組むことにしました。写真のように糸をセットし、赤い糸を両方の輪に通し、これをクランプに引っ掛けて組みます。これだと、中心につなぎ目ができますが、今回はモヘアであることと、ゴム編みに通すので、それほど目立ちません。

ちょうど、予定の長さに仕上がったので、クランプから外してみると、少し縮みました。これは予想外。ピンと引っ張った状態で測るのと、ふわっと置いて測るのとでは、２センチほど違います。母には手持ちのコードエンドを付けるということで、我慢してもらいました。

A Happy New Year!

The first bespoke braid order for this year came from my mother on the New Year’s Day.  She needs a braid for her sweater she is currently knitting.  “No problem!”, I said.  Later, I learned that bespoke braids are not easy to make.

The sweater is made with a purple mohair yarn and a grey medium-fine woolen yarn combined together as a yarn.  A braid is to go through holes made in the rib stitch part to be tied in the front.  I chose to braid BBCC to make the braid round. 

First, I made a 10-loop braid and showed it to her.  She said, “It is too thick and too hard.”  Then I made a 8-loop braid and it was still too thick.  Finally I made a loosely braided 6-loop braid and got her OK!

The braid length is 73 cm.  The longest I can handle, that is I can tighten by stretching both arms, is 55 cm.  The final braid is about 30% shorter than the original threads.  So the longest braid I can make is 38cm.  Therefore, I decided to start with the center of the length.  The photograph shows how to set the threads.  The red thread goes to the clamp.  With this method, you can see the center connecting part, but it is not so conspicuous because the material is mohair and the braid goes through rib stitches.

I braided until the length became exactly 73cm, but it shrunk when I took the braid off the clamp.  I did not expect this.  There is about 2 cm difference between the length I measured on the clump and off the clump.  My mother said it was acceptable.  I made it up with two code-ends I had in stock in my sewing box.

高麗組または重打 Koraigumi or Shigeuchi AB or DC

ワークショップでは、仕上がりの綺麗さに目がくらんでいましたが、組んだ高麗組をよく見ると、どこかで見たような。そう、クテ打ちの基本動作で取り上げるのを忘れているABとよく似ています。という訳で、今日は、基本動作ABとDCをします。

重打（しげうち）と呼ばれる組み方です。外回し（AB）でも中通し（CD）でもできます。角組の厚さを半分にして横に平に広げたような形です。ループ数が少ない場合は平らになりますが、ループ数が１０本を越えると、紐は平らではなく、ABの場合は右手側に、CDの場合は左手側に、内側に丸くなりますが、これを指でしごいて平にします。

一番上の黄赤緑の紐は、最初はABで、途中からDCに変えて組んでいます。V字の向きが上下逆になっているのが分かりますか。

At the Workshop, I was so impressed by the beautiful finish of the work that I did not notice that I had seen this braiding before.  It looks very similar to Shigeuchi!  Today we learn Shigeuchi, AB and DC.

We can do this either AB or CD.  The braid looks to have a half the thickness and a double width of Kakugumi.  When you work with a small number of loops, the braid is flat, but with over 10 loops, the braid is inwardly curled on the right hand side for AB, and on the left hand side for CD.  You need to knead the braid with fingers to make it flat.

I started with AB for the top braid, and changed in the middle to DC.  You will notice the V-fell up-side-down.

組紐・組物学会ワークショップ The Kumihimo Society Workshop

組紐・組物学会のワークショップ「ディスクで高麗組」に参加しました。私が受け取った材料は、かなりしっかり撚った絹糸４本と金色のメタル糸２本、大小の金色ボタン各１個です。３種類の動作で１サイクルという比較的簡単な組み方ですが、でき上がったものはとても豪華です。

いつもゆるい撚りのコットンキングで組んでいるので、まず、絹の光沢に感激。そして強い撚りの糸は立体的に組み上がるように思います。それにメタリックゴールドが加わると、金色のボタンと引き立て合って、豪華絢爛です。

途中で操作を誤って、色の順序が狂ってきたので、解いてやり直そうとしたのですが、闇雲に解いて訳が分からなくなってしまいました。思い切って先生にお願いすると、さっさっさっと糸を操って、元の状態に戻して下さいました。「解く時は、組む時と同じように１動作ずつ逆に戻って下さい」と、優しいお言葉。今日の教訓は、「急がば回れ」でした。 

ワークショップのもうひとつの楽しみは、参加者からいろいろ教えていただけること。皆さん、さりげなく組紐のメガネチェーンや、ペンダント、ブレスレットを身につけておられます。それらを見せて頂くだけでも、はるばる京都まで来たかいがあったというもの。それに、今日は、ディスクを手で持たなくても両手で糸を操作できるように工夫した台も拝見したし、隣の席に座っていた生徒さんは、昇苑という組紐の材料やできあがった物を販売しているお店の方で、楽しいお話も聞けました。

Attended The Kumihimo Society’s workshop “Koraigumi using a kumihimo disc” in Kyoto.  At the entrance I received a set of material; 4 hard twist silk threads, 2 metal threads and a big and a small golden buttons.  It was a rather easy kumihimo with three movements as one cycle.  The finished work, however, is just gorgeous. 

First of all, I was impressed by the silk glazing since I am so much used to Cotton King.  Besides strong twist threads seem to make more stereoscopic braids.  Then metallic gold threads look so superb with golden buttons. 

While braiding, I made a mistake and got mixed up with the color order.  I undid it and tried to start again.  But I got lost.  I daringly asked the teacher for help.  She manipulated threads one by one and corrected the whole mess.  She said, “When you undo, do it in the reverse order one by one.”  She was so efficient and gentle.  My lesson today is “the longest way around is the shortest way home”.

Another joy of attending a workshop is that you can learn a lot from attendants.  Everyone is wearing kumihimo glass chains, pendants, and bracelets.  It is worth traveling all the way to Kyoto just to look at their works.  Today I also saw a special hand-made supporting stand for a disc enabling to operate with both hands.  An attendant next to me worked for a shop Shoen where they make and sell kumihimo and materials.  We had an interesting talk.

これは私のお気に入りで、カメラのストラップやらいろいろに使っています。写真ではうずまきの中からBBCCで始めて、半分位からBBDDに変えました。お見せしにくいのですが、裏と表で、同じ模様がポジとネガになっています。

This is one of my favorites.  I made a camera strap and others with BBCC.  In the photo, from the center I started with BBCC and changed in the middle to BBDD.  Though it is hard to see, the same pattern appears on the back and in the front of the braid, but in the opposite colors forming negative-positive contrast.
